Personal Story

I grew up the youngest of 13 kids in a small town in Ohio. I watched my mother work in her bbq restaurant preparing different sauces. This is what sparked my fascination with the art of grilling and soon had me wanting to perfect my skills. Now I am a fourth-generation bbq master.

After high school, I enlisted in the Army in 1983. I was an explosives expert and lived in Germany, Turkey, Hawaii, Georgia, Texas, and Virginia. I met my wife, Valerie, when I was stationed in Ft. Knox, KY and we resettled in Kentucky after I retired in 2003. Now I help veterans get disability claims through the V.A. I have four grown children and nine grandchildren.

After retiring from the military I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from Indiana Wesleyan University. I am also a graduate of the VetStart program at the University Of Louisville, studying restaurant entrepreneurship.

Possessing a passion for serving others, I am a volunteer cook at Wayside Christian Mission in Louisville, Kentucky. Moe-liciousbbq donates food overages to Fed by Faith, a non-profit organization working with Beargrass Christian Church in Louisville, Kentucky.

Business Description

Moe-liciousbbq is a mobile food truck business that delivers high-quality, great-tasting food. We also offer catering. I started this business in September 2012 with an initial investment of $900 and a 2001 Ford Expedition. Now it has been handpicked by Ft. Knox to serve our nation’s finest as the only permanently stationed food truck at the base.

My Army career provided me with opportunities to talk with world-renowned chefs who helped me to hone my skills curing and caring for meat. This is what makes Moe-liciousbbq a step above the rest. My sauce is a tomato-based sauce that is slow-cooked with over 20 different spices and a special ingredient that you can only get at Moe-liciousbbq.

Moelicious is not just another bbq joint. We have loyal fans who praise everything on our menu from ribs to our cole slaw, brisket, pulled pork, pulled chicken, rib tips, baked beans, potato salad, mac and cheese, and collard greens. Our goal is to be the #1 bbq company in the Louisville area.

Anyone that tastes my food will see how passionate I am about the craft that I have perfected. If it does not meet my quality standards it will not be served to the customer.

What is the purpose of this loan?

This loan will allow me to expand to serve Fort Knox. I expect this purchase to nearly double my business, allowing me to leave my job with Veterans Affairs and focus on Moe-liciousbbq full time.

We have alternative financing lined up to purchase a second food truck. This loan helps up to outfit it with:
graphics $1200
an additional grill $1800
a stove $300
a serving table $100

The rest of the loan will go toward improvements on the truck.

Moe-liciousbbq right now, just operating on weekends, brings in on average $2,500 to $3,000 a weekend. When we do festivals we can make $3,000 a day.
