In an era when the enemy is often dehumanized, I find it essential to promote the human dimension of War. Although the Falklands / Malvinas conflict is the historical starting point of Voices of the Tempest, the work aims to expose how the horrors of War are common to all cultures at all times.
This humanistic and socially driven project intends to create a space in which a new debate can take place. One that will hopefully allow the cycle of exclusion and violence to end and to open up another that inspires healing and hope. One that serves as a reminder that underneath the uniforms are men: husbands, fathers, brothers, sons… and that among the victims are also mothers, sisters, daughters, all of whom are looking for solace and meaning to the pain they carry.
My goal is to invite and stimulate a dialogue between all parts, to draw a circle that will allow us to understand that the pain of one side is the same as the other. To accept the fact that when people live through extreme and traumatic experiences during wartime, they have more things in common than the differences that separate them, which is precisely what connects us all as human beings.
Voices of the Tempest is at its core, a journey towards reconciliation, replacing the bravery of battle with the courage of compassion and forgiveness.
Project’s Genesis:
I began to work on Voices of the Tempest in 2003, upon my return from an expedition funded by the National Geographic, which sought to locate the remains of the Argentine Navy’s War Cruiser ARA General Belgrano in the South Atlantic.
I mediated the interviews of former Argentinean and British officers as the mission attempted to locate the remains of the sunken vessel in this lonely corner of the earth. The extreme weather, as waves and winds lashed our ship with tremendous force. Meanwhile, an emotional drama every bit as powerful unfolded aboard as the former wartime enemies recalled their experiences, reliving their painful memories and feelings of fear and guilt.
The visual manifestations of these South Atlantic waters –now enraged, now painfully guilty, now a symbol of freedom, of danger, of peace– show that the ocean had the final word in this history of war and death.
That voyage marked the beginning of a ten-year, personal journey that would take me through the experiences of British and Argentine veterans and the Falkland Islanders who endured the conflict in 1982. I made four trips to the Falkland / Malvinas Islands where I spent a total of fourteen weeks, six trips to Argentina and several to Great Britain. I was on the Islands, filming and recording their voices to better understand how this conflict had impacted and shaped their lives, even to the extent of altering the very nature of their community’s existence.
It was on the Islands’ old battlefields, with the echoes of recounted stories still resonating in my mind, that I started to scrutinize the wild landscape still marked with traces of war, searching for visual metaphors that would reveal the undercurrent of these powerful stories. I began to develop a dialogue –through both photographs and words– about how long it was taking the terrain to heal and how long it was taking the men who fought and suffered there to recover, if they ever do.
The Book:
The hardcover book’s size is 9.85″ x 13.25″ (22.5cm x 36cm), 528 pages, weighing almost10lbs (5Kgs) with the text in English and Spanish language. It includes 22 black and white and 58 color original photographs and over 70 previously unpublished personal letters and documents.
After collecting almost 300 hours of testimonies, I have conceived a book that will bring together the voices of Argentine and British veterans along with the Falkland Islanders. These testimonies provide the reader with a variety of experiences and points of view, including dissenting opinions within every side. These multiple voices are weaved in a way that resembles that initial conversation aboard the search vessel ten years ago. The veterans speak and react to each other, finding a mutual understanding, even between former enemies.
My intention is to provide a primary source of history through lived experience; supplementing each nation’s official narrative as the dominant source of history with a personal point of view.
The design (http://www.de-mo.org) is comprised of photographs, personal accounts and letters, as well as documents. It invites the reader to accompany the protagonists in their journey and to share their experiences during and after the conflict.
The photographs were edited with Robert Pledge, founder and president of Contact Press Images (http://www.contactpressimages.com), who has curated major exhibitions worldwide and served on prestigious international juries including that of the World Press Photo Foundation, three times. He is also a member and former president of the Board of Trustees of the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund. Pledge has been involved with this project since its inception.
The introduction is written by Mark Sealy, director of Autograph ABP (http://autograph-abp.co.ok), who has a special interest in photography and its relationship with social change and cultural violence. Sealy has supported this project since 2004. In 2012 he curated three of my exhibitions in the U.K. coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the Falklands / Malvinas war.

Voces de la Tempestad: Una Guerra, todas las guerras
En una era en que el enemigo es muchas veces deshumanizado, creo que es necesario promover la dimensión humana de la guerra. Aunque el conflicto de Malvinas es el punto de partida histórico de Voces de la Tempestad, el trabajo apunta a exponer como los horrores de la guerra son comunes a todas las culturas y en todos los tiempos.
He reunido las voces de los veteranos argentinos y británicos con las de los residentes de las islas Malvinas que vivieron allí durante el conflico, enhebrando sus historias e incluyendo distintos puntos de vista. Juntar a los tres bandos en un mismo cuerpo de trabajo no se ha hecho nunca hasta ahora. Mi esperanza es que, al nivelar el campo de juego, tanto para vencedores como para vencidos, las voces que no se han expresado en el pasado puedan ahora ser escuchadas, en un esfuerzo para prevenir que sean borradas de la historia.
Este proyecto, motivado por un impulso social y humanístico, intenta crear un espacio en el que se pueda generar un nuevo debate. Uno que permita cerrar el ciclo de exclusión y violencia, que abra otro que inspire la sanación y la esperanza, así como recordarnos que debajo de los uniformes hay hombres: esposos, padres, hermanos, hijos… y que entre las víctimas están también las madres, hermanas, hijas. Y que todos ellos buscan consuelo y sentido al dolor que cargan.
Mi objetivo es invitar y estimular al diálogo entre las partes, trazar un círculo que nos permita entender que el dolor de un lado es el mismo que el del otro. Aceptar el hecho de que la gente que atraviesa experiencias extremas y traumáticas durante una guerra tiene más cosas en común que las diferencias que los separan. Y es eso lo que precisamente nos conecta a todos como seres humanos.
Voces de la Tempestad es, en esencia, un viaje hacia la reconciliación, reemplazando la bravura del combate por el coraje de la compasión y el perdón.
Génesis del proyecto:
En el 2003 comencé a trabajar en Voces de la Tempestad tras regresar de una expedición financiada por la National Geographic, cuya misión era encontrar los restos del crucero de guerra argentino ARA General Belgrano, en el Atlántico Sur.
Yo medié las entrevistas de los oficiales argentinos y británicos mientras la misión intentaba localizar los restos del crucero hundido en ese rincón solitario de la Tierra. En el medio del desafío físico impuesto por el clima extremo, mientras las olas y los vientos azotaban nuestra embarcación con una fuerza tremenda, a bordo sucedía un drama emocional igualmente poderoso mientras los antiguos enemigos recordaban sus experiencias, reviviendo recuerdos dolorosos y sentimientos de miedo y culpa.
Las manifestaciones visuales de las aguas del Atlántico Sur, embravecidas y dolorosamente culpables, ahora son un símbolo de libertad, de peligro, de paz. Nos muestran que el océano tuvo la palabra final en esta historia de guerra y muerte.
Esta expedición marcó el comienzo de un viaje personal que duraría diez años y que me llevaría a recorrer las experiencias de los veteranos argentinos y británicos, así como las de los isleños que soportaron el conflicto en 1982. Realicé cuatro viajes a las islas Malvinas –donde pasé un total de catorce semanas–, seis viajes a la Argentina y otros tantos a Gran Bretaña. En las islas filmé y grabé las voces de sus habitantes con el propósito de entender cómo había impactado el conflicto en sus vidas, hasta el punto de alterar el entramado mismo de la comunidad.
Fue en los antiguos campos de batalla, con los ecos de las historias que me habían contado todavía resonando en mi mente, cuando empecé a interpelar el paisaje salvaje –que todavía presenta los rastros de la guerra–, en busca de metáforas visuales que revelaran las poderosas historias subyacentes. Empecé a desarrollar un díalogo –a través de palabras e imágenes– acerca de cuánto tiempo insume el terreno en repararse y cuánto tiempo le lleva sanarse al hombre que peleó y sufrió allí, si es que eso es posible.
El libro:
Tiene tapa dura, el tamaño es de 22.5cm x 36cm (9.85″ x 13.25″), tiene 528 páginas, su peso es de casi 5 Kgs / 10lbs y el texto es en español e inglés. Incluye fotos originales, 22 en blanco y negro y 58 en color y más de 70 cartas personales y documentos que no han sido publicados previamente.
Después de compilar casi 300 horas de testimonios, concebí un libro que junta las voces de los veteranos argentinos y británicos con las de los residentes de las islas Malvinas. Estos testimonios proveen al lector una gran variedad de experiencias y puntos de vista diferentes, inclusive los de quienes disienten entre sí en un mismo bando. Esta multiplicidad de voces está enhebrada para que resuene como la conversación inicial a bordo de la embarcación diez años antes. Los veteranos hablan y reaccionan entre sí, buscando un mutuo entendimiento, inclusive entre antiguos enemigos.
Mi intención es proveer una fuente de la historia que deriva de las experiencias vividas para suplementar la narrativa oficial de ambas naciones –que es hoy la información dominante– con una centrada en puntos de vista personales.
El diseño (http://www.de-mo.org) se compone de fotografías, historias individuales, cartas y documentos. Invita al lector a acompañar a los protagonistas en sus viajes personales y a compartir sus experiencias durante y después del conflicto.
Las fotografías fueron editadas con Robert Pledge, fundador y presidente de Contact Press Images (http://www.contactpressimages.com), curador de importantes exhibiciones en varios países del mundo y miembro de prestigiosos jurados internacionales, entre ellos la fundación de la World Press, en la que fue jurado tres veces. También es miembro del directorio de la fundación W. Eugene Smith. Pledge estuvo involucrado en este proyecto desde su comienzo.
