About this project
We are OpenBook, a group of students who have seen the need to solve the problem of accumulating read books at home. After reading a book, you will probably store it in your library, lend it to a friend or recycle it. However, we were willing to find a way to reuse those books for more people. That is the reason why we came up with the idea of creating a network of Book Vending Machines all around Madrid. Book Vending Machines allow users to leave books they had read, and in exchange collect another one.
Our project
Those who devour books nonstop, we have at home a lot of copies and read them, again and again, as moviegoers reproduce again and again their favorite movies. However, movies occupy a lot of space in our houses.
Therefore, with this Project we could help other book lovers enjoy them and we will also benefit from others books. We are looking for funding, in order to make this project come true and start building our machines.
Where can you find a Book Vending Machine?
This project starts in Madrid with 50 vending machines. The Book Vending Machines are usually located on metro stations and bus stops. We think there are great places where collecting a book and start reading in your way to work.
A database system will be responsible for storing the titles and authors of every book left in the machine. To be able to use our Book Vending Machines, you will need to register first on our website* and request a member card.
The personal card costs just 5€ (it doesn’t have time limit) and each recharge is 25 € (per year).

Users will have hundreds of books to choose, as this project has a large database of books that increases every day so they can be used by all.
Design of the Book Vending Machines
Our Book Vending Machines are big enough to store plenty of books. It is also very intelligent, it will locate the books into the shelves and give you back your desired book. It also includes a tactile screen, a software with the database, and card and barcode reader.

Risks and challenges
It is posible that the vending machines can suffer damages caused by the normal use or for vandalism acts. In this case, we will hire a maintenance team that will reapair the machines as soon as posible.
