Three years ago I traveled to Uganda with BeadforLife, an organization that helps raise families out of extreme poverty. It was a transformative heart, mind and eye opening experience, where I saw first-hand the effects of extreme on families. I returned with a mission to help educate people, especially children, to more fully understand this complex subject. This summer of 2016, I plan to return to Uganda with my 24 year old son as my assistant, to gather materials, interviews, photos and research for a children’s book we will write and illustrate about extreme poverty. The book will focus on the life of a girl from Uganda. Our goal is to tell a thoughtful and educational story through one girl’s eyes as she does her daily chores, goes to school and dreams of her future beyond poverty. We hope that young girls from all walks of life will gain an understanding of extreme poverty, become more conscious of what place they occupy in a larger community, and of how they can contribute. The book will provide suggestions and resources showing exactly how young readers can help give back. I am so thrilled that I can use my design talents with my son’s help, as well as some help from my literary friends to tell this story! The donations for this campaign will go towards our trip to Uganda. This will include airfare, food, lodging, and the necessary equipment to document our research. Our time and talents will be donated to produce this book. Any surplus donations will be passed along to BeadforLife for the publication of this book.
