IT has long been discussed, maybe even occasionally investigated.
Now, it’s time to put the talking to the test.
If you believe Scotland could sustain its own, standalone sports newspaper – with more pages for more sport, then read on…
Let’s first be clear: this would be a paper different to what’s already out there: no match reports, not even news, per se; more a celebration of what’s ahead, not bound by any perceived hierarchy but how compelling the story.
It will showcase all sport, at all levels, and involve some of the country’s best-known writers plus several new ones that we will be seeking to nurture.
It would be a newspaper too that would pop through your letterbox – on a weekly, subscription basis – and include among its columnists names such as Judy Murray and Pat Nevin.
We have already our designers lined up for a pilot issue, the world-renowned PalmerWatson consultancy.
So, we’re asking you to support a single, pilot, proof-of-concept issue, delivered to your door. 40pp printed newspaper.
10,000 copies.
We are asking for £5 or £10, £100 or £250.
But we require lots of you to back it, because anything less suggests Scotland does not have the stomach for it.
Only if we hit our target will pledges be followed up; anything short of our target and no money will be taken.
And should the pilot come off, we’d be seeking enough subscribers to make the project a weekly title – again popping through your letterbox.
We have this appeal running until February 25. That’s not very far away. So, you need to act now; tell your friends, alert your colleagues, let your teammates know. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.
This is a project being spearheaded by a group of journalists, including from the media website, allmediascotland.com. For more information, email sportsdiary@allmediascotland.com.
Once you have pledged, tell everyone about it, via your own social network. We have a twitter feed: www.twitter.com/scotsportspaper, to share news of our latest supporters.
And should we succeed in hitting our target, there will be then a delay – as we design the pilot and workflows – aiming for an issue coming to you most likely during May.
